Plot Summary
Derek Hawthorne has ascended to become a member of the all-powerful Committee, which rules the world through the nebulous House. The House, officially, exists to protect humanity from the vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness that imperil humanity. Unofficially, it exists to protect its own power.
When his old partner, Christopher Hang, turns up as one of the undead--Derek is nonplussed to say the least. Christopher also has a message that troubles the tiny remains of Derek's conscience: the House is running a secret project to not only control supernaturals but eliminate them. Now, Derek has to figure out if he's to side with the supernatural or humanity or neither. Oh and did we mention Dracula, pirates, and werewolves were involved too?
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on August 24, 2018
There are times when things happen and Derek and his team have to deal with the fallout. But that’s nothing new, except when things turn really bad and the choices left are really bad ones.
The work is a modern day fantasy supernatural adventure mystery which has an interesting plot and characters which work well in the story setting. It is not erotica by any means, even if one of the main characters is a succubus. The story is more focused on the intrigue, the mythos and overall the plot works well to hold the story together, even if the narrative gets a little lost from time to time.
The succubus of the work, Shannon, is delightful, quite a lot of fun at times and there’s an aspect of mystery in her past that captured my attention. She’s not evil or stereotypical by any means, though there’s a feeling that her true self is a bit shaded beneath and I would have liked for a bit more exploration of her than the story allowed for.
Three out of five pitchforks.
It’s a shame the series didn’t continue as the characters are interesting, the story was written well and there is an interesting mythos and story universe created. There’s so many little hints dropped about Shannon that needed to be explored and I really wonder about them and her.
