There are things that go bump in the night and mysteries waiting in the darkness seeking prey. For one soul, the whispers are irroestiable and when he discovers the truth, it might be far too late.
The work is a very short piece of erotic horror which sets a tone from the beginning of mystery and carries that throughout. There are erotic aspects to the story, but the mystery, and the eventual horror aspect, are the main focus overall. The writing is very captivating, the mood is set and remains throughout. There are a few points where it it more tell than show, which is a bit of a shame.
The succubus character, who is never named, is both very much a succubus and at the same time isn’t quite a succubus/ The seductive aspects are there, there’s a bit of mind control as well which I enjoyed. When the erotic part of the story comes into focus she feels very much like a succubus throughout.
But there’s really nothing revealed about her, she is a mystery left unanswered in her motivation, character and all else about her. That was a little disappointing, but as the story is seen from the main character’s perspective it really was expected.
Four out of five pitchforks.
I find erotic horror difficult to enjoy much of the time and this work is one of the very few that I was drawn into and kept turning the pages to see what came next. The ending however was a bit of a let down, it’s very much telegraphed from the start and was expected. With that said, it made sense, closed the story in a way that worked overall. Still the question about the succubus, if she really was one, was unanswered and I didn’t expect it to be.
